Right away – a rhetorical question. Here you are, dear reader, what are you going to do for the last 5 years of your working career? Yes, yes, exactly you? The correct answer is, of course, keep programming!
We will not go into technical details – in what language, what projects, in what company and, finally, in what part of the world this will happen. Let’s narrow down the range of assumptions – let’s say you stay to work here, in sunny Belarus with its mild autumn, snowless winter and long hot summer; that’s exactly what global warming made it like fifteen years later. Let’s also say that you have achieved mastery in your field and become a recognized expert, receiving dozens of tempting offers every day on your LinkedIn account, and your track record is decorated with the names of world-famous companies.
And you know what? This can’t help but happen! The IT services market continues to develop, despite global recessions and crises. Obsolete ones are being replaced by new technologies that require even more qualified specialists. One wave gives rise to another, but our task is to move from ridge to ridge, gaining experience and knowledge and enjoying the process of surfing!🙂
Several such waves are a thing of the distant past. The operating systems MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 have sunk into oblivion (and once upon a time Windows could fit on one floppy disk… floppy disk, not CD!), Clipper and FoxPro DBMS, Borland Pascal / Delphi development environments. Not everyone will be able to show a child what a floppy magnetic disk is (however, in the school computer science course in the 6th grade there is still such a concept – personally tested in the fall of 2015!). Smartphones have made the home PC almost unnecessary, and the TV in the store is now “smarter” than the office computer.
For us, residents of the sunny IT country of forests and lakes, there is one more reason to remain a programmer. Just look around and think about what else, besides programming, you know how to do and love to do. How much do these activities replenish your wallet? How much can you travel to distant countries on business trips?
To be continued..!🙂
