10 Theses To All JobSeekers
December 28, 2023
This is going to be the briefest article I have written. I know one for sure, I will not introduce anything new here. Sorry, if I missed your expectations this time.
- If you got unemployed, think about this moment as the most wanted one in your life. Now you can manage your time absolutely free, and no one will blame you. At least during the first month.
- First thing after having a small relax, think about how you got there. Get all your skeletons in the closet, and draw your conclusions. Even if you were fired with the whole of your department, something brought you there.
- Then review your experience, think about positions you could take, and prepare the set of CVs for these positions. Keep only relevant info, if your experience is too rich. Say goodbye to your past, not matching the vacancy. In my case, it was hard to put all my professional life into 2 pages. If you have 1-page CV, probably, it would probably be even better.
- Start looking for a new job from your past colleagues and friends. Even if they cannot offer you something right now, they may refer you, if a vacancy is open in their company, and get their bonuses for a good worker; and likely your CV will be processed out of order 🙂
- If you have “T-shaped” profile, like me, think of where your peak is, and focus on matching vacancies first, if not only.
- Use your brain or AI or whatever you can to pass through the first gate of HR’s sifter and get a human’s response to the CV you sent, better as a brief pre-screening call or LinkedIn chat. It will prompt that you are on the right path.
- If you are getting denials at the latter stages, think about this. If you get systematic denials, improve your both weaknesses and strengths.
- Take notes of the most commonly asked skills that you do not possess, and acquire them. Better of course practically, implementing some pet project or participating in off-line workshop. Personally, I am exploring LinkedIn Learning at the moment.
- Periods of negative and positive mood change each other, however, you may not need to wait till the better time. Use the neuroscience to get out of the hole. And, if you are at the bottom of your hole, get out of this, and do not try to apply to any vacancy unless they are looking for mourners.
- Sounding realistic, get prepared with “plan B”. Identify an alternative way to follow professionally, probably, with a lower position in a social hierarchy. However, do your best to keep on “plan A” track.
Best luck!
